In 2018, Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP) took the initiative to draw up a report on the environmental impact of cruise ships on the immediate surroundings of Langelinie in Copenhagen.
Freight handling in Northern Harbour has become more salty, at least temporarily. This is because a load of salt was redirected to North Harbour in late January as the quays in the bulk harbour in Malmö were full.
CMP is very likely to be affected by the lockouts announced by the Transport Workers’ Union today, since CMP in Malmö is one of the ports that has received strike alerts from the Dock Workers' Union. CMP plans to continue its operations to a large extent.
Expected lockout dates are: January 23 and 27.

CMP is increasingly investing in fossil-free solutions, most recently in electric or biogas powered cars – for both the liquid and dry bulk operations. It is the operations managers’ vans that are now becoming more environmentally friendly. But that’s just the beginning.
Christmas and New Year is attracting cruise passengers to Copenhagen this year too, with CMP setting a new record of nine arrivals. As always, it is the Christmas markets in and around Copenhagen that the visitors want to experience.
Ships call at Malmö every week with containers of refuse-derived fuel, known as RDF. The containers are unloaded at CMP for onward transport to Sysav’s waste-to-energy plant, where the waste is converted into electricity and heat. The operation got underway earlier this year and is based on import of refuse-derived fuel from England.
CMP will be participating in the ”Logistics & Transport” trade fair in Gothenburg this year too. The focus will be on marketing Malmö Industrial Park. Skanska, Catena and Malmö City will also be on site at the shared stand.
The cruise season concluded in Visby on 18 October. The ship Marco Polo put out from the new terminal at about 4.00 pm for its journey onward to Klaipeda in Lithuania. Visby has received 75 cruise arrivals and about 75,000 passengers during 2018, which is a substantial increase compared with last year.
About every other year CMP dredges the sea bed on the Swedish side to maintain accessibility for vessels in the port and the approaches. The work process begins with what is known as multi-beam echo sounding, which measures the distance to the sea bed using sound pulses. This is highly advanced technology, used in accordance with requirements from the Swedish Transport Agency and the Swedish Marit
Based on the discussions in media regarding shore power, CMP has the following comment:
Last week, two large structural elements from one of the cranes at Amager Power Station was delivered to CMP in Copenhagen. Crane 10 at the Amager Power Station is to be dismantled and scrapped, a task undertaken by the CMP Logistics Department.
