Innovative inspections

A vitally important part of our work is the continuous inspection of our quays. In the ordinary situation, the inspection of quays is performed from a ship, where one checks from the sea side that the quays are in a satisfactory condition. However the most recent time it was time to check the quays in Norra Hamnen in Malmö, we chose to test a new, innovative way to conduct the inspection. With the assistance of a drone pilot from NCC, the quays were instead inspected from above.

From a maintenance perspective, there is a quite a lot of potential in the use of drones.

“In addition to verifying that the quays are in an approved condition, it is possible to use drones to inspect rooftops, see the tops of the masts and check the tents in the ports dry bulk terminals,” explains Anders Calmstedt, Head of Operations and Maintenance.

Anders is in favour of the usage of drones and explains that it provides us the possibility to see things we would otherwise risked having missed.

“We will definitely be using drones again. It is cost-effective and gives us the chance to see the operations from an entirely new angle,” he concludes.
